One local jurisdiction in Georgia is starting to clean house. Cobb County sheriff deputies have been duly trained by federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) under the 287(g) program. They are starting deportation procedings against illegal aliens in their prison system. Here’s the story from the Marietta Daily Journal:
Cobb begins deporting jailed illegal immigrants
By Kelly Brooks | Tuesday, July 31, 2007Nearly two months after a group of Cobb sheriff deputies graduated from a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement training program, officials continue to identify and initiate deportation procedures for jailed illegal immigrants.
According to the sheriff’s department, between July 1 and 23, Cobb jail officials and ICE interviewed 86 inmates, placed immigration holds on 68 and started deportation proceedings against 42.
ICE spokesman Richard Rocha said the program - “just one of the tools in (ICE’s) toolbox” - allows local law enforcement to begin removal proceedings themselves by filling out deportation paperwork….
Following the deputies’ training completion early in June, Cobb Sheriff Neil Warren said that … of the inmates to whom ICE assigned detainer status, most were in jail because of rape, armed robbery and drug trafficking….
Cobb Police Chief George Hatfield has attributed a large portion of violent crimes in Cobb to Hispanic criminals….
