Turning A Deaf Ear

June 21st, 2007

President Bush and many members of Congress are stubbornly ignoring the wishes of the American citizens who elected them. When their immigration legislation S. 1348 failed to achieve cloture in the Senate, it should have been consigned to the archives. But no — Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and his unlikely coalition of Democrats, Republican sell-outs, and President Bush dusted it off one more time. It has reappeared in a “corrected and updated” version as S. 1639.

But now they can no longer plead ignorance about the will of the American people. A UPI/Zogby Poll released yesterday makes the situation clear:

Government Mishandling Immigration

Almost all Americans take dim view of Bush and Congressional actions on immigration reform

Americans give both President Bush and the Congress failing marks on their handling of immigration, according to a new UPI/Zogby poll on the topic. The Zogby Interactive poll of 8,300 adults nationwide finds just 3% of Americans viewing Congress’s handling of the immigration issue in favorable terms, while 9% say the same of the President-even as respondents in the survey rated it the second most important issue facing the country, after the war in Iraq.

As the U.S. Senate prepares to vote on an immigration reform bill … in Washington, Americans said they take a dim view of that bill, with just 38% holding a favorable view of the legislation….

Yesterday, Harry Reid filed for a cloture vote on the revised amnesty bill. The story is reported by NumbersUSA:

Yesterday, Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) filed to invoke cloture on S. 1639, the “corrected and updated” version of S. 1348. If cloture is invoked, debate on the bill would be cut short and only amendments deemed appropriate by the bill’s backers could be discussed; in other words, a “YES” vote on cloture is equivalent to a vote for amnesty. Due to Senate rules, the cloture vote may not occur before this Friday (June 22), but may be delayed while the Senate completes other business….

To follow the action, visit the Senate Vote Day Action Center. Meanwhile, call both of your senators every day expressing your opposition to this bill. Also, send an email to both of them every day asking them not to vote for cloture. The Washington, DC phone numbers and contact form web pages for all of the Senators are listed here.
