A bipartisan group of senators reached agreement with the White House Thursday on an immigration overhaul to grant quick legal status to millions of illegal immigrants already in the U.S. and fortify the border against new ones…

It set the stage for what promises to be a bruising battle next week in the Senate on one of Bush’s top non-war priorities.

The group of lawmakers had been haggling over the terms of agreement for weeks were reviewing language negotiated Wednesday night in efforts to nail down a deal. Among the final sticking points was a stubborn dispute over how much family ties count toward green cards under a new “point system.” The plan prioritizes advanced skills and education levels for future immigrants.

Funniest line of the day?

“This is what my 9th grade teacher told me government is all about and I finally got to experience it,” said Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.).

That same teacher ended up doing time in the big house for an AMWAY scheme gone awry.

The Divine Miss M is freaking out a little bit as well, she says “The amnesty sellout arrives.”

Her favorite line of the day? This knee slapper from Arlen “Hair club for men” Spector “This will restore the rule of law.”

Okay, let’s all take a deep breath and allow Jake to provide a little historical perspective here and we don’t have to turn the dial very far on the way-back machine.

The breathless reporting at the moment seems to indicate that if this truly horrendous bill passes the Senate we’re all doomed. This is sheer nonsense, they know it and you should as well. What happened last year?

THE AMNESTY BILL PASSED THE SENATE!!!

For goodness sakes, let’s not be complete puppets here people. There is a malevolent intelligence behind this strategy and what they want is to convince you that this bill is an unstoppable juggernaut crushing everything in its path.

Just one problem, last year they were portraying that bill as an “unstoppable juggernaut” and yet it didn’t pass, did it?

As I said yesterday, this does not exempt anybody from doing their duty as citizens, pick up the phone and make your wishes known. And for the small but delightful handful of lunatics that read this blog and support illegal immigration you should be calling as well.

Let me repeat, last year a bill not dissimilar to this one PASSED the Senate and was ultimately defeated, the fact that Nancy Pelosi is demanding cover from the Republicans tells you exactly how strong their position isn’t. I was going to search through our archives and provide some relevant links but It’s taking for bloody ever and I don’t like y’all that much!

In all seriousness, yes we need to fight this tooth and nail, but let’s not act as if we’ve lost and are beaten when nothing could be further from the truth. Yes this is a very bad bill, however, on the plus side most of the new (D)’s are of the Blue Dog variety and plenty of house (R)’s won’t like this bill.
