1.  Our fiirst story describes an illegal immigrant who was raping a woman. She was struggling to resist him. So the rapist asked a passer-by for assistance. Instead of coming to the woman’s aid, the second fellow, also an illegal immigrant, held the woman down and choked her, so that it was easier for the first fellow to enjoy the rape. Later, when standing trial for his crime, the rapist, who had already had three taxpayer-provided lawyers, demanded a fourth from the judge, insisting that he must have a lawyer who spoke Spanish.

2.  Our second story concerns an illegal immigrant who sexually molested his teen-age daughter for years, during which time she had two incestuous pregnancies. Following both births, the father forced her to throw the babies down an air shaft in their apartment building.

Coverage on the first story is from two articles in the New Jersey Star Ledger:

Man says he helped accused rapist

Juan Amendano was walking home the early morning hours of July 10, 2005 when he heard a woman screaming in the woods off Lafayette Avenue in Morristown. He soon saw why: The woman was being raped by a stranger, who asked him to cover her mouth and help him.

Instead of helping the woman, Amendano, who had been drinking that night, held the 20-year-old woman down, he told Superior Court Judge Joseph Falcone yesterday in Morristown….

Amendano described his role in the attack while pleading guilty to first-degree aggravated sexual assault under an agreement. The prosecution is recommending he be put behind bars for 10 years, but the judge has said if he fully cooperates he will face eight years. Amendano, a 25-year-old illegal immigrant from Ecuador, must also register as a sex offender and testify against the man charged with raping the woman.

The accused rapist, Joel Romero, 27, who lived in Morristown at the time of the crime and is an illegal immigrant from Honduras, has been charged with aggravated sexual assault, criminal restraint and other charges, officials said. Romero is due in Falcone’s courtroom….

Plea deal off as defendant in rape seeks new lawyer

Joel Romero was expected to sign off on a plea agreement yesterday that would put him behind bars for 24 years for the kidnapping and rape of a 20-year-old woman two years ago in Morristown, court officials said.

Instead, through an interpreter, Romero told Superior Court Judge Joseph Falcone he wanted to replace his attorney for the fourth time. He wouldn’t agree to the assistant prosecutor’s offer until he had a new attorney from the public defender’s office.

And his next attorney should know how to speak Spanish, he told the judge….

The second story was reported in the Washington Times:

Father Gets 35 Years in Daughter’s Rape

A father who raped his teenage daughter over several years and ordered her to throw two newborns he had fathered with her down an air shaft was sentenced to 35 years in prison….

One of the babies survived and is in foster care. The other one died after being thrown down the shaft.

“These are heinous, cruel and depraved acts committed against your own flesh and blood,” said Superior Court Judge Kevin G. Callahan, who imposed the maximum sentence Wednesday.

According to prosecutors, the father threatened to kill the daughter and her mother if she did not throw the babies down the shaft. The daughter admitted throwing the babies down the shaft under her father’s orders….

DNA tests showed the man fathered both children - a girl, who died just after birth, and a boy, who survived - with his daughter, who is now 19….

Authorities said the man, an illegal immigrant from El Salvador, did not meet the girl until after she moved to the United States in 2000 as a 13-year-old. Their sexual relationship began around that time, prosecutor Mike D’Andrea said….

The relationship was discovered after neighbors heard a baby crying and called police in September 2005. The officers found a newborn boy at the bottom of an air shaft in their three-story apartment building.

The boy had a fractured skull but survived after landing on a pile of trash and old cigarette packages, D’Andrea said. He is now in foster care.

Further investigation turned up a mummified baby girl born in 2003, D’Andrea said.

The man lived in a small apartment with his brother, wife and two adolescent children and worked as a cook at a restaurant in Hackensack….

These people almost seem like members of a different species.
